Man shot by KCPD officer during early-morning altercation in stable condition

One man is in stable condition Wednesday after being shot by a Kansas City police officer.

Officers with the Kansas City Police Department responded to the area of Kensington Avenue and East 39th Street just before 7:45 a.m. after receiving a report regarding an individual shooting a firearm into the air, according to a news release from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

There, they found a man matching the suspect’s description, the news release said. When confronted by officers, the man displayed a handgun.

A KCPD officer fired his weapon toward the man, striking him, the highway patrol said. The man was transported to an area hospital in stable condition.

The highway patrol’s division of drug and crime control is investigating the shooting, according to the news release. The initial incident involving the man will be investigated by KCPD.
