Apartment fire displaces more than 25 KCK residents, renders building unlivable
A weekend fire that officials believe someone intentionally set has displaced more than 25 residents of a Kansas City, Kansas, apartment complex.
Early Sunday morning, first responders addressed the fire at Eagle’s Nest Apartments, located in the 1400 Block of North 38th St. The fire was isolated to a three-story, multifamily building within the complex.
No residents or firefighters were injured during the incident, although about 19 apartment units were destroyed, according to the Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department. A person of interest in connection with the fire was placed in police custody as officials investigated the scene, KCKFD said.
Burned apartment building unfit to live in
The fire spread into the building’s attic space and damaged some wiring in the building, so officials had the power shut off, a KCKFD spokesperson told The Star. As it stands, that part of the property is unfit to live in.
The department estimated that the building was a complete loss due to damages, although the complex’s owner is having a contractor assess whether it can be repaired.
The American Red Cross of Greater Kansas City and Northwest Missouri set up a temporary shelter for affected residents on Sunday morning, although no residents ended up needing to use it and ended up staying elsewhere, according to the organization.
As of this week, the Red Cross didn’t know the extent of the damages or how much financial assistance the families will need in the coming days and weeks. The organization offers financial assistance, which varies by the family or person affected, to temporarily help people meet their housing needs.
