One person dead after three people shot at Pleasant Hill Price Chopper
A 45-year-old woman is dead after a shooting at a Pleasant Hill grocery store, which also left two other people shot on Memorial Day.
The shooting occurred at the Pleasant Hill Price Chopper at 2101 SW State Route 7, according to the Pleasant Hill Missouri Police Department. Police responded to the shooting at 4:28 p.m.
One victim was a 17-year-old male, who is an employee of the store and is from Pleasant Hill. He was transported to a local hospital and is in stable condition.
The third individual shot was the suspect, a 27-year-old male from Pleasant Hill, who was taken into custody while being transported to a local hospital. Police believe he suffered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The 45-year-old woman, who is from Johnson County, Missouri, was a shopper at the store. Police don’t believe the suspect was a shopper.
“This is not something that happens in Pleasant Hill. We want to make sure that the community knows that they’re safe. The shooter is in custody, and we’ll have more information probably sometime early tomorrow,” said Pleasant Hill Police Chief Tommy Wright in a press briefing. Wright had retired May 22, but was brought back in to assist with the shooting.
Police are unsure if the victims and suspect knew each other. A bolt action rifle was recovered from the scene. Bullets did not go into the store when the shooting occurred.
Pleasant Hill Mayor Don Donovan, who was present at the briefing, called it a “horrible situation,” and noted how incidents like the shooting usually don’t occur in Pleasant Hill.
The incident is being investigated as a homicide. Pleasant Hill is approximately 40 minutes southeast from downtown Kansas City. It is unclear what the Pleasant Hill Price Chopper’s operating hours will be following the incident.
