This growing KC neighborhood is getting paid parking for the first time
The Berkley Riverfront is growing, as it’s now in Phase I of a 10-year, $1 billion mixed-use development led by Chris and Angie Long, principal owners of the KC Current.
Its growth is the reason for the latest change to the area that will impact visitors and residents.
The Port Authority of Kansas City announced that starting Monday, June 1, paid parking will be coming to the area. Port KC began installing new parking signs around Berkley Riverfront on Wednesday, May 20.
The parking management program comes as the riverfront expects more visitors, an increase in neighborhood activities and new residents, Port KC said.
“Safe, reliable access for emergency vehicles, clear circulation and reduced congestion along with consistent and predictable parking availability” were the top reasons Port KC gave for the changes.
“Berkley Riverfront has grown and as we welcome more residents and visitors to the riverfront, it’s an absolute necessity that parking spots be available for everyone to utilize them,” said Jon Stephens, president and CEO of Port KC, in a statement. “The new parking management program will allow more Kansas Citians and visitors from around the Kansas City metro area to enjoy our beautiful Missouri Riverfront.”
Developments happening near the riverfront include construction on 433 apartments, new parks and 55,000 square feet of commercial space, including Current Landing — a shopping, entertainment and residential district designed to bring Kansas Citians closer to the waterfront.
The riverfront streetcar extension west of CPKC Stadium opened Monday, May 18. A pedestrian bridge also recently opened, and work continues on the second CORE apartment building.
How much will it cost to park at Berkley Riverfront?

Paid parking will be enforced 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Port KC says. Your vehicle can be towed or booted without additional warning if you don’t pay via the PMC Pay QR codes posted on the signs or through additional assistance if you don’t want to pay digitally.
Port KC says it’s not trying to make money from parking and that the program is intended to support parking operations and management within the Berkley Riverfront district.
“Any revenue generated through parking rates are reinvested into maintenance, operations, safety, and visitor access improvements in the area,” Port KC said in a statement.
