KC man accused of murder following scrapped marijuana sale, shootout
A Kansas City man was charged with felony murder in a February shooting in Kansas City’s East Community Team North neighborhood after a woman scrapped plans to buy marijuana from him.
Prosecutors charged Jer’ron D. McCallop with one count of second-degree felony murder and one count of first-degree harassment, both felonies, and one misdemeanor count of second-degree harassment in Jackson County Circuit Court on Thursday.
Court records do not yet list an attorney for McCallop.
Terrion Johnson, 25, was fatally wounded in the shooting.
Police were called to the area of East 20th Street and Monroe Avenue on Feb. 12 and found the victim on the ground with a gun in his hand. First responders declared the man dead at the scene.
Shell casings were located close to a nearby home and in an alley, and a resident of the home told officers that she had planned to buy marijuana from McCallop but then bought it elsewhere when McCallop told her it would be a couple of hours before he could get to her, according to court documents. When she notified McCallop she had bought marijuana elsewhere, he allegedly began to threaten her in messages.
McCallop drove by her residence as she and a group were outside, she told police. She said she saw McCallop and two others run up, saw him pull a gun and heard shots ring out. She described a shootout between the two groups after McCallop had approached, according to court documents.
State law allows prosecutors to charge a person with felony murder when they attempt or commit a felony and in doing so, a person is killed. Prosecutors charged McCallop with felony murder in connection with the alleged first-degree harassment for displaying a firearm.
