A Lawrence elementary school student was injured Wednesday morning after they were struck by a car while walking to school in the city’s southeast side.

The Prairie Park Elementary School student was walking near East 27th Street and Mayfair Drive just before 8 a.m. Wednesday when they were struck by the vehicle, according to Facebook posts from Lawrence Public Schools and the Lawrence Police Department.

The child’s parent was “contacted immediately,” Lawrence Public Schools said. The police department said it believed the child sustained “minor injuries” during the incident, but they were taken to an area hospital “out of an abundance of caution.”

The driver involved in the incident remained at the scene and spoke with officers, who do not believe speed or alcohol contributed to the crash, according to the police department. Investigators believe the “glare of the sun” may have been a contributing factor.
