The southbound lanes of Interstate 35 at Lone Elm Road in Olathe were closed after a fatal crash Tuesday.

A dispatcher with the Kansas Highway Patrol said the first call for the crash came in around 12:18 p.m. A vehicle caught fire and one person died in the crash, the dispatcher said.

The highway patrol said it was a single-vehicle crash.

First responders were on the scene and alerting drivers to avoid the area. It was unclear how long it will take before traffic opens back up in the area.

Vehicles were being diverted off the highway and onto Lone Elm Road. Traffic cameras operated by KC Scout showed traffic at a halt in the southbound lanes between Lone Elm Road and 151st Street.

“Please avoid the area and find an alternate route,” the Olathe Police Department said on Facebook.

An investigation into the crash was ongoing.
