Riverfront streetcar opens Monday, but route is already changing

KansasCity

With less than a week until the grand opening of the Riverfront extension, the Kansas City streetcar route is already changing.

The Kansas City Streetcar Authority announced temporary changes to the streetcar route ahead of the Riverfront extension opening on Monday, May 18.

All passengers will have to exit the streetcar at the River Market Northbound stop. Those wishing to continue south must walk to the River Market southbound stop on 3rd Street.

This change allows streetcar operators to continue onto the 0.7 miles of new tracks and practice navigating them.

There is already a new way to get to the riverfront — Grand Boulevard pedestrian bridge officially opened Friday. The city-managed pedestrian and bike bridge from the River Market to the Riverfront adjoins the streetcar tracks.

The public is invited to the new Riverfront stop for a grand opening news conference at 11 a.m. on May 18, with a community picnic and celebration from noon to 2 p.m.
