Prosecutors said they do not believe an assistant coach for the Kansas City Chiefs committed a crime and that a court dismissed a case against him after a review of more evidence.

Assistant Coach Dave Merritt was arrested April 22 on suspicion of domestic battery. He pleaded not guilty in court the next day and was released on bond.

A Johnson County District Court judge dismissed the case on Thursday. Prosecutors in the case said in a statement that a further review of evidence led to the dismissal.

“As prosecutors we have an ethical duty to do the right thing based on the evidence and the law,” the statement read. “After reviewing additional evidence, we do not believe a crime has been committed by Mr. Merritt and therefore we dismissed the case.”

Merritt is a defensive backs coach who’s been with the team since 2019. He’s been part of three Super Bowl-championship coaching staffs in Kansas City. He’s been an NFL coach since 2001.
