An Amazon delivery driver accused of hitting a 4-year-old boy near a Kansas City park and then driving off Monday has been released from police custody.

The boy, identified as Tadens Joseph, died from his injuries after the collision near Maple Park in the Pendleton Heights neighborhood.

Capt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department, said in an email Wednesday that police released a woman who was a “subject of interest” after conferring with prosecutors. An investigation is ongoing.

“This is common in the case of fatal crashes,” he said. “As I indicated yesterday the prosecutors need the entirety of the investigative findings which can take several weeks to compile. A subject cannot be held that long without charges.”

Becchina said the delivery vehicle would remain in police custody during the investigation. Police have said they were also in contact with Amazon and a third-party “delivery driving company” as part of their investigation.

Police said the collision happened just after the driver of the Amazon vehicle completed a delivery in the 1800 block of East Third Terrace, a quiet no-outlet drive. The boy had been playing nearby before he went into the road and was hit by the vehicle as it was heading west, police said.
