You can get your fines reduced from these KC-area libraries if you donate food

If you owe the Mid-Continent Library some money, you now have a chance to get those fees reduced.

The Kansas City-area library system is launching its Food for Fines initiative, which collects food items for local charities and food pantries. It also gives donors a chance to pay off overdue fines with the library.

The Colbern Road Library Center is one of the Mid-Continent libraries that are accepting donations for the “Food for Fine” initiative.

The library said that each food item will count as $1.50 off existing overdue fines or replacement card charges, up to $30. Of course, you are welcome to donate even if you don’t have any fees.

The initiative runs from May 4-10. The food can be donated to any MCPL location. You can find the list of locations on the MCPL website.

Some locations in KC include the Green Hills Library Center, 8581 N. Green Hills Road. Outside KC, Lee’s Summit, Gladstone, Buckner, Blue Springs, Independence and more have locations.

The following items are suggested by MCPL to be donated:

  • Boxed meals
  • Canned soup
  • Canned meat, fruit, or vegetables
  • Peanut butter
  • Cereal
  • Pasta
  • Sugar-free/low sodium/gluten-free products

MCPL also asks for donors to not donate open packages, damaged items, expired products, plastic or cardboard drink containers, nonnutritious items and glass containers.
