Police said Monday a suspect was custody in connection with the Saturday night shooting of a man with “a unique passion for horse racing.”

Melchor Hinojos Carbjal, 51, was fatally shot outside the Peculiar Lions Community Building, where a “gathering/party” was held, Capt. Phillip Grabmiller of the Peculiar Police Department, said Monday.

Police were called at approximately 10:15 p.m. and found people fleeing the scene.

Hinojos Carbjal, the sole victim, was taken to Belton Regional Hospital, where he died, police said.

The Missouri Highway Patrol, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, and the Belton and Pleasant Hill Police Departments joined in the search for the suspect, according to Grabmiller.

As of Monday morning, a suspect was held at the Cass County Detention Center on a 24-hour hold, but charges had not been filed, Grabmiller said.

The Facebook page for Show Ecuestre — a Kansas City, Kansas, equestrian group — posted a remembrance of Hinojos Carbjal Sunday afternoon.

“A family man, respectful, with a great love for horses and a unique passion for horse racing. Your legacy lives in each memory and each person that had the fortune of meeting you,” the post reads, translated from the original Spanish.

“Melchor, thank you for always being there and for your sincere willingness to ask, ‘How can I help?’”
