Royals fans have claimed over 42,000 free meals at KC-based chain. Here’s how

Ahead of a seven-game homestand, Royals fans are hoping the team scores big at Kauffman Stadium in the name of free food.

Every time the Royals score six or more runs while they’re playing at home, members of Kansas City-based chain Hawaiian Bros’ loyalty program can claim a free classic plate lunch the following day through the Plates for Plates promotion.

A representative with the restaurant said it should only happen about 20% of the time. But so far, it’s happened at seven of the Royals’ 17 home games for a total of 41%. If the Royals kept this pace for their 81 home games, fans can expect to claim a free plate lunch after 33 home games.

The rate of free lunches from Hawaiian Bros follows a recent stretch of five consecutive high-scoring home games from April 21-26, where drive-thru lines saw an uptick in customers. A Hawaiian Bros representative says it has served over 42,000 meals and added over 24,000 rewards members since the beginning of the promotion.

The restaurant said that employees inside its Kansas City-area locations have done a good job handling the increased traffic. They will continue to make adjustments to support them as needed to ensure the customers are getting what they came for.

“Royals fans are incredibly enthusiastic which gave us confidence that this could be a meaningful way to celebrate together and be a part of something bigger,” Hawaiian Bros said.

The partnership between the Royals and Hawaiian Bros initially began as a concessions opportunity inside Kauffman Stadium. As discussions went further, a representative with Hawaiian Bros said they saw a chance to connect with fans not only in-stadium but also postgame at their restaurants.

The promotion is available at 27 locations across the Kansas City region and surrounding cities, including restaurants in Arkansas, Iowa and Nebraska. You can also claim the deal at participating restaurants in Columbia, St. Louis, St. Joseph and Springfield in Missouri, and Lawrence and Manhattan in Kansas.

Rewards members will see the offer in their account the day after the Royals score six runs. The offer is only valid for one day.
