Children’s Mercy unveils ‘transformative’ $1B+ new tower near downtown KC
Hospital leaders at Children’s Mercy on Wednesday unveiled a new tower at its flagship campus near downtown designed to increase capacity as pediatric hospitals face increasing demand across the metro.
Children’s Mercy officials announced the massive expansion at a press conference Wednesday morning alongside Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe and in a news release. The more than $1 billion tower is planned for the hospital’s Adele Hall campus in Kansas City’s Hospital Hill neighborhood.
“Demand is already pressing our capacity, so this is about readiness and responsibility,” said Alejandro Quiroga, the hospital’s president and CEO. “When a child in our community needs an ICU bed, and minutes matter, we must have the space and the very best teams ready to act.”
Hospital officials are hoping the new tower, slated to be completed in 2031, will increase the facility’s overall capacity for acute care by up to 30%. The tower is expected to serve as the new home for the hospital’s pediatric and newborn intensive care units and will include a new surgical center.
The expansion is also expected to add more natural light, green space and a new lobby in the hopes of enhancing comfort and care for families, hospital leaders, who touted the tower as a ‘transformative project,’ said on Wednesday. Initial work on the four-year expansion is expected to begin this fall.
“This moment reflects real momentum and a clear choice to honor our legacy by building what kids need next,” Quiroga said.
