One man is dead after an altercation led to gunshots in Kansas City Friday night.

Police patrolling the area of Independence Avenue and Monroe Avenue were flagged down around 9 p.m. by a person who said someone had been shot, according to Alayna Gonzalez, spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department.

Officers found a man in the grass unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound. Life-saving measures were performed while police waited for EMS to arrive, according to Gonzalez. The victim was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead.

Preliminary information indicated an interaction among several people escalated into shots being fired, striking the victim. A man was seen fleeing the area on foot and detectives are working to identify a person of interest. No one is currently in police custody, but the investigation is ongoing, according to Gonzalez.

This marks the 37th homicide this year, compared to 46 this time last year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes police shootings.
