Customer seeks help to repair Overland Park boba shop after crash into shop
A friend of an Overland Park boba business is seeking help to fund repairs after a car drove through it last month.
“ The owner is a local to the area and an important part of the community, providing a place for everyone to enjoy a tasty treat and friendly environment,” Valeria Burge said in a GoFundMe post.
Overland Park police were called to Bubble Cup just after 10 a.m. on March 31 to the tea shop at 8331 W. 135th St. A woman in a sedan had accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake and drove into the building, breaking its front wall and windows, all the way up to the shop’s counter, according to John Lacy, spokesperson for the Overland Park Police Department.
Since the crash, the shop has been closed for repairs. Wang said in a statement to The Star on Wednesday that she is waiting her her door to be fixed, as well as getting the all clear she can open safely.
But Burge said in the post that Wang’s recent surgery has made the stress about the store so much worse. She hopes to raise $5,000 to help with costs.
“I am reaching out to your generosity and kindness to consider supporting this small business, to offset some of the costs while the dust settles for this beloved milk tea shop,” Burge said in the post.
Wang moved to Kansas City from Taiwan 3 1/2 years ago. Shortly after in May 2023, she opened her shop, selling a variety of milk teas including flavored brewed tea, classic milk tea, fruit tea, flavored milk tea, fresh milk tea, flavored slush, sea salt tea, flavored snow and creative snow, according to its website.
Bubble Cup Tea Zone specializes in tea from Taiwan. They brew it in spring water before adding flavor or cane sugar, according to its website. Now, her Overland Park storefront will be closed until further notice. Wang hopes it takes just a few months to make repairs.
Wang had previously told The Star she hopes to open as soon as possible. A reopening date has not yet been set.
