Early-morning house fire leaves 1 dead in Kansas City

One person is dead, and three others are displaced after an early morning fire engulfed a home Tuesday in Kansas City’s East Community Team North neighborhood, a fire department spokesman said.

Kansas City firefighters responded to the blaze shortly before 3:40 a.m. in the 1600 block of Elmwood Avenue, said Battalion Chief Riley Nolan, a spokesman for the Kansas City Fire Department.

Arriving crews reported flames showing from the second floor of the two-story building, Nolan said. Firefighters advanced two hose lines into the house to battle the blaze from inside.

Firefighters searching the home found the victim dead in a second-floor bedroom, Nolan said. The Red Cross responded to assist three adults displaced by the fire.

The Kansas City Police Department’s bomb and arson unit is investigating the fire.
