The eaglets in Blue Springs need names. You can help pick them now
It’s been two weeks since three eaglets hatched from the nest of bald eagles Liberty and Freedom in Blue Springs. While one of their eaglets died, the two surviving babies continue to eat and grow on the livestream.
As followers continue to watch the eagles’ journey, the city of Blue Springs needs your help. They’re asking you to help pick the names of the eaglets.
Blue Springs has this survey available online where you can vote for your favorite pair of names. Voting will be open through midnight, Friday, April 10, and the city will tally the votes and announce the winning names shortly after.
The following name pairs are on the ballot:
- Honor and Valor
- Chief and Royal
- Scout and Ranger
- Sky and Sapphire
- Opalite and Onyx
Erin Woodiel, the Missouri Department of Conservation’s media specialist for the Kansas City region, said the eaglets will remain in the nest being cared for by their parents for 10-12 weeks as their pin feathers, or flight feathers, start coming in.
As it nears the end of that period, Woodiel said the eaglets may start branching out and hopping around in the tree as they get ready to fly. They also will receive less support and food from their parents as they reach the age where they need to start hunting on their own.
Missouri has more than 600 active bald eagle nests, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation. The department says approximately 1,200 to 2,700 bald eagles are reported in the state each year.
