Many employees at the Oracle office in Kansas City may have lost their jobs after it was reported that the company began its largest layoff ever Tuesday.

According to a report from The Next Web, a news site focused on new technology and startup companies, employees were notified via email around 6 a.m. local time that their roles had been eliminated as part of a broader organizational change, and that the day of the email was their final working day.

Neither Oracle, a major tech company, nor its Kansas City office have made an official statement to the public about the layoffs. It’s estimated by investment bank TD Cowen that the cuts will hit between 20,000 and 30,000 employees.

Oracle acquired health care information technology company Cerner in June 2022 for $28.3 billion. Cerner was founded in Kansas City in 1979. Prior to the acquisition, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said his goal was to try and protect the 13,000 employees who already worked in the area on Cerner’s payroll.

Bloomberg reported March 5 that thousands of jobs were planned to be cut in Oracle. Unnamed sources from the report speculated that some cuts were targeting roles that AI would “help make redundant.”

On the Kansas City subreddit, multiple users in the comments say they have been fired, or know someone that was fired. One user claimed that many of their friends were fired from the company Tuesday.

News publication Business Insider obtained the email that employees were sent Tuesday, which offered a severance package to the employees.

“After careful consideration of Oracle’s current business needs, we have made the decision to eliminate your role as part of a broader organizational change. We are grateful for your dedication, hard work, and the impact you have made during your time with us,” the email read.

Oracle employs 162,000 people globally and made $57 billion in revenue in the 2025 fiscal year.
