One dead after morning rollover crash on U.S. 71 near Rockridge Quarry
One man is dead after a rollover car crash on a south Kansas City highway Wednesday morning.
The crash occurred around 11:45 a.m. on U.S. 71 in south Kansas City near Hickman Mills Drive, Capt. Jake Becchina, a spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department, said in a news release Wednesday.
A preliminary investigation found that a man in a beige Chevrolet Silverado truck was driving north on U.S. 71 from Bannister Road, near the Rockridge Quarry, when he entered a grassy median, Becchina said. It’s unclear why he left the roadway.
As the driver attempted to regain control, the truck traveled down a concrete embankment, where it went airborne before striking a guardrail, Becchina said. The vehicle then flipped over before rolling to a stop.
The driver was declared dead at the scene, Becchina said. The man’s death marks Kansas City’s 18th traffic fatality of 2026, compared to 12 at this time last year.
The incident is under investigation by the Kansas City Police Department.
