One dead, two critically injured after fiery crash on Blue Ridge Boulevard in KC

One person is dead and two others are in critical condition following a fiery crash Friday in southeast Kansas City.

Emergency personnel were called to the area of 46th and Blue Ridge Boulevard around 8:30 p.m. Friday on reports of a critical injury collision, Sgt. Phillip DiMartino, a spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department, said in a news release Saturday.

A preliminary investigation revealed a silver Hyundai Sonata was traveling north on Blue Ridge Boulevard at “a high rate of speed,” DiMartino said. The car failed to negotiate a curve before driving off the left side of the road.

The Sonata continued north before it overturned, caught on fire and eventually came to a stop, DiMartino said.

The driver was transported to an area hospital, where they were pronounced dead by hospital staff around 6:45 a.m. Saturday, DiMartino said.

At the time of the collision, two other passengers were taken to an area hospital with critical injuries, DiMartino said. The police department did not have updates on their conditions Sunday morning.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing, DiMartino said. The driver’s death marks the 16th traffic fatality in Kansas City of 2026, compared to 11 at this time last year.
