8 Irish spots for celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in Kansas City
St. Patrick’s Day parades around the Kansas City area always draws crowds in the hundreds of thousands.
For those who want to celebrate with a green beer or a pint of Guinness, here are eight restaurant and pubs with Irish influence or owners that are featuring anything from drink and food specials to live music.
Browne’s Irish Marketplace
Browne’s Irish Marketplace on the corner of 33rd Street and Pennsylvania Avenue has long been a destination for people to gather after the Kansas City’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Originally opened in 1887 as Flavin’s Market at 27th Street and Jefferson Street in front of the family home, according to its website.
The market became a place where the neighborhood met and ate through the Great Depression and world wars. After five generations and 139 years, Browne’s carries on the same mission of fostering community while serving good food, gifts and drinks
Browne’s Irish Marketplace is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Conroy’s Public House
The local Irish-American run restaurant and bar serves a blend of Irish dishes with an American twist, according to its website. There are four locations: two in Overland Park, Leawood and Westwood.
On St. Patrick’s Day, they will be severing up specials including beef stew, corned beef & cabbage, fish & chips, Guinness brownies, bread pudding and more, according to a Facebook post.
“Come celebrate with Ray, Ryan, and the crew and grab a pint while you’re at it,” Conroy’s Public House said in the post.
Conroy’s Public House is open Monday through Thursday 11 a.m. to midnight, Friday and Saturday from until close, and Sunday from until 8 p.m.
Gael’s Public House and Sports
Located between the Plaza and Brookside at 5424 Troost Ave., Gaels Public House & Sports will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day opening at 10 a.m., to host a parade watch party and DJ Smoov spinning beats at noon, according to a Facebook post.
Gaels Public House & Sports will be serving draft beers ($3), Fireball shots ($3), tall boy + whiskey ($7), as well as regular menu food items like nachos, pub poutine, shepherd’s pie, cottage pie, handhelds and pizza.
Gaels is normally open six days a week and closed Tuesdays. It opens every day at 11 a.m. and closes 10 p.m. on Monday, midnight Wednesday through Friday, 10 p.m. on Saturday and 8 p.m. Sunday.
KC Hooley House
If you find yourself near Power & Light, KC Hooley House at 170 E. 14th St. will open its doors at 9 a.m. Tuesday with breakfast items. It will also serve up corned beef and cabbage, shepherd’s pie, fish and chips, Guinness, green beers and more, according to a Facebook post.
The St. Patrick’s Day celebration will also include live music from a local Irish band and Irish dancers, according to the post.
KC Hooley House is open Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 a.m.
Kelly’s Westport Inn
A Westport staple, Kelly’s Westport Inn, 500 Westport Road, is known as the oldest building in Kansas City. It was built in 1851 and held an array of businesses before becoming the Westport Inn. That bar was known amongst locals as Kelly, after beloved bartender Randal Kelly, a native a County Clare, Ireland who began working there in 1947, according to its website.
Doors will open Tuesday at 10 a.m. and have a $10 cover charge. The benefits of that cover charge will go to Down Syndrome Innovations of KC, according to its website.
Kelly’s Westport Inn is open Monday through Friday at 11:30 a.m. through 1:30 a.m. and weekends from 11 a.m. through 3 a.m.
Llywelyn’s Pub
Originally from St. Louis, Llywelyn’s Pub is a Celtic pub in Lee’s Summit, 301 SE Douglas St., that serves up wings, burgers, sandwiches, corned beef and cabbage, shepherd’s pie and other traditional pub fare.
“This is what Llywelyn’s was built for,” Llywelyn’s Pub said in a Facebook post.
Doors on Tuesday will open at 10 a.m., and include a full day of live music, DJs and a bag piper, according to another post.
Llywelyn’s Pub is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. and Friday through Saturday until 1:30 a.m.
O’Dowd’s Gastrobar
O’Dowd’s Gastrobar has been open at 4742 Pennsylvania Ave. on the Plaza since 1997 featuring live music every day. Doors will open early on St. Patrick’s Day, serving Irish breakfast at 8 a.m., and switching to traditional Irish fare at 11 a.m. Items on the menu include corned beef hash, reuben, fish and chips and corned beef and cabbage, according to its website.
Live music will be on all day. There will also be drink deals like the Jameson Mule ($12), Bloody Molly ($12), Irish Espresso Martini ($14) and Irish Drop Shot ($8). The rooftop deck will also be open and be playing music from DJ Highnoone and Sweet T from 1 to 9 p.m.
O’Dowd’s Gastrobar is open Monday from 3 to 9 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to midnight, Friday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Restless Spirits Distillery
Restless Spirits was established in 2016 by Mike Shannon, a fifth generation Kansas City native of Irish descent, and his wife Benay Shannon, a science teacher turned distiller. The Distillery, which makes gin, whiskey and vodka, is located at 109 E. 18th Ave. in North Kansas City, has earned Missouri Distillery of the Year every year since they opened, according to their website.
The St. Patrick’s Day celebration will go from 2 to 7 p.m. and include specialty pours, Irish coffee, and 20% off your bar tab when you wear Restless merch, according to a Facebook post.
Restless Spirits Distillery is open from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday through Saturday.
