Downtown KC car chase ends in crash; 3 suspects caught after fleeing on foot
Police continue to investigate a crash that happened in downtown Kansas City Sunday afternoon that stemmed from a car chase near 19th and Main.
The incident occurred just before 1:50 p.m. Sunday and was related to an aggravated assault, according to information provided by the Kansas City Police Department . A preliminary investigation showed that the “fleeing vehicle was traveling northbound on Main Street, from 20th Street at a high rate of speed,” police said.
At that time, a streetcar was stopped in that area, and an Amazon delivery truck had temporarily stopped in the double-turn lane.
“To bypass the stopped vehicles, the fleeing driver entered the oncoming lane of traffic between 20th Street and 19th Street, where the vehicle struck a black Acura in the right front fender,” police said in an email. “The fleeing vehicle came to rest near 19th Street and Main Street.
“Three occupants exited the vehicle and fled on foot but were quickly taken into custody.”
In a 2024 investigation, The Star examined police chases across the metro and revealed that many local agencies allowed officers to chase at high speed for any infraction. On average, the series found, police departments in the metro engage in more than three pursuits every day.
