‘Good Morning America’ to visit Kansas Speedway to celebrate USA’s 250th birthday
“Good Morning America” will be at the Kansas Speedway in KCK on its Thursday broadcast as part of a yearlong series celebrating the 250th birthday of the United States.
Filming is closed to the public, but viewers in Kansas City can watch from 7-9 a.m. Central.
The “50 States in 50 Weeks: America the Beautiful” series sends a “GMA” anchor or correspondent to a different state each week following the order in which they became a state.
Kansas was the 34th state to join the Union on January 29, 1861.
The visits showcase “changemakers” and focus on each state’s culture, history, landmarks and traditions. For instance, the series kicked off last year on July 3 in Delaware, where chief meteorologist Ginger Zee met the lifeguards at Rehoboth Beach.
ABC News correspondent Rhiannon Ally, a veteran of KC TV stations who grew up in Kansas City, will broadcast live from the Speedway with a feature piece on the Strataca Kansas Underground Salt Museum in Hutchinson and another segment featuring other landmarks in the Sunflower State.
The salt mine has been in the news lately because “lost” reels of Elvis Presley performances from the 1970s, discovered in the private storage facility there by Australian director Baz Luhrmann’s team, are the basis of his new documentary/concert film, “EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert.”
