Woman dies after crash with semi truck in downtown Kansas City
A woman died after a crash involving a semi truck that closed roads for two hours in downtown Kansas City Saturday morning, police said.
Officers responded around 8:30 a.m. to Interstate 70 near the Walnut Street exit on a reported crash.
A preliminary investigation indicates that a black Hyundai with a flat tire was stopped in a lane without its hazard lights on, according to a crash report.
A tractor-trailer drove west on I-70 when it merged into another lane to pass a second tractor-trailer. Once it merged into the next lane, the tractor-trailer struck the rear of the black Hyundai, according to the crash report.
The collision caused significant rear damage to the Hyundai, according to the crash report.
The driver of the Hyundai was transported to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Police have not yet publicly identified the woman who died.
The Missouri Department of Transportation posted on social media to alert Kansas City drivers of road closures in the area while crews cleared the scene.
Roads were fully reopened around 11:40 a.m., MoDOT said.
Saturday’s crash is Kansas City’s 10th traffic death this year, according to Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a spokeswoman with the Kansas City Police Department. At this time last year, the city had recorded 5 traffic deaths.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
