KC native slides for Olympic bobsled gold this weekend. Here’s how to watch
Ahead of the Winter Olympics, The Star asked Caleb Furnell what success would look like at the games.
“Success is obviously a medal,” the 2019 Lee’s Summit West High School graduate and member of one of the United States’ four-man bobsled teams said. “Everyone wants to get a medal, but not everyone can win a medal.”
Furnell will get his shot this weekend as the men’s four-man bobsled competition, one of the last events to award medals at Milano Cortina 2026, hits the ice.
Furnell’s team raced on the track at the Cortina Sliding Centre during the International Bobsleigh Federation’s World Cup in November and finished seventh out of 31 teams. Ahead of the Olympics, Furnell said his team had improved quite a bit since the World Cup, and with good start times and successful piloting, he expected they would put together some good runs.
“More than anything, I’m just excited to be there,” he said. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I’m just excited to take it all in and experience it for what it is. And then of course, within that, I’m excited to compete.”
How to watch
The competition will take place across four heats over two days, Saturday and Sunday. The team with the fastest total time will take gold, so every run and every hundredth of a second matters.
Those interested in watching the competition live will have to set an early-morning alarm, as heats are scheduled to start at 3 a.m. Central on Saturday. Second runs will start at 4:55 a.m. Heats will resume at 3 a.m. on Sunday, and the final runs will start at 5:15 a.m. All competitions can be seen streaming live on Peacock, and some runs will also be aired on cable on USA.
