Rivalry basketball games cancelled in Raytown after altercation after school

A high school district rivalry basketball game was cancelled Friday afternoon following a physical altercation at a Raytown high school.

The Raytown C-2 School District announced in a Facebook post Friday that it cancelled the “Battle of the Birds” basketball games between Raytown High School and Raytown South High School set for Saturday.

The games were scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Raytown South High School, starting with boys junior varsity. Girls and boys varsity were set to follow, respectively.

Chief Communications Officer for the Raytown C-2 School District, Marrisa Cleaver Wamble, told The Star in an email on Friday that the games were cancelled “out of an abundance of caution for the safety” of “students, staff and the community.”

In an email sent to students’ guardians on Friday, the district said an altercation occurred between students just outside Raytown South High School during dismissal of school for the day.

“School administration along with RQS security acted swiftly to bring the situation under control,” the email said.

Raytown police and emergency personnel responded to the school to provide assistance and “care for those who needed attention,” the email said.

“The safety and well-being of our students and staff is always our first and most important priority,” the email said. “While this type of behavior is not reflective of our school community, please know that we take it very seriously and it will not be tolerated. Students who violate the student code of conduct will face disciplinary consequences and legal actions.”

The school said all tickets for the now-cancelled basketball games will be refunded.

The statement sent to families said the district would “continue to be vigilant” in creating a safe, positive environment for students and staff.
