Merriam police investigating death of man found near Turkey Creek Trail

The Merriam Police Department has opened a death investigation for a man found dead near Turkey Creek Trail on Thursday.

Officers with the Merriam Police Department were called to the Turkey Creek walking trail near 75th Street around 4 p.m. on reports of a person “who appeared to be deceased,” according to a news release from the department.

There, officers found a man dead in a wooded area, according to the news release. The investigation has been classified as an “unattended death” while an autopsy is underway.

The news release said there is no indication of a threat to the public. Investigators are not searching for anyone in connection with the incident.

The Turkey Creek trail opened in Merriam in 1998, according to the Kansas City, Kansas Public Library. The 4.5- mile trail goes along Turkey Creek, passing through wooded areas, a butterfly garden and sculpture park.

Police have not released the identity of the man.
