Fuel spill from tractor trailer accident in downtown KC snarls morning traffic
Crews spent more than an hour Tuesday morning cleaning up a gas spill in downtown Kansas City, along westbound Interstate 670, after a traffic accident involving a tractor trailer.
Crews were called to the scene around 9 a.m., according to Riley Nolan, Battalion Chief with the Kansas City Fire Department. The truck’s diesel fuel spilled onto the roadway and caused traffic delays, as lanes had to be closed during the cleanup. No one was injured in the incident, Nolan said.
About 110 gallons of fuel spilled onto the highway, Nolan said. The hazardous materials team, or HAZMAT team, was called in to the scene. Traffic was stalled in the area as crews cleaned up the diesel.
Media reports said cargo fell from the truck and ruptured a section of its fuel tank.
Crews have since finished the clean-up and left the scene.
