Police and fire officials are investigating an early Friday morning house fire that killed one woman and hospitalized another.

Kansas City firefighters responded to the home in the 4400 block of N. Indiana around 5 a.m., said Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins, a Kansas City Fire Department spokesperson, in a news release. The call included that there were “trapped occupants,” the release said.

When firefighters arrived, flames were showing from a single story home.

One occupant was able to escape, but suffered severe smoke inhalation and was transported to a local hospital, where they’re listed in stable but critical condition, the release said. The second occupant, who was physically challenged, was unable to escape. The department said both occupants of the home are women and “appear to be mid to late 40s.”

The fire department was able to get the fire under control at 5:25 am. The department will assist the Kansas City Police Department Bomb and Arson with the investigation, which is standard protocol in a fire fatality, the release said.
