R&B singer sues KCPD after being kicked out of Chiefs playoff game
A popular musician filed a lawsuit against the Kansas City Police Department and an event services company following an altercation at the Kansas City Chiefs AFC Championship Game in 2021.
Tremaine Neverson, popularly known as Trey Songz, is suing KCPD, Whelan Event Services and the Government Employees Health Association on one count of negligence, according to a petition filed in Jackson County court.
Songz was an attendee at the Kansas City Chiefs AFC Championship Game at Arrowhead Stadium on Jan. 24, 2021, where he was allegedly verbally “heckled” by other attendees because of his “notoriety,” the lawsuit said.
The heckling “escalated into threats and harassment,” and Whelan Event Services and KCPD officers were summoned to Songz’s seat, the lawsuit said.
The lawsuit claims Songz was “physically assaulted, wrongfully arrested, handcuffed and detained.”
According to the suit, the defendants failed to “intervene and protect” Songz, and did not “exercise any professional duty to take reasonable care” of Songz.
Songz was charged with trespassing, resisting arrest and assault of a law enforcement officer, according to the lawsuit. All charges were dismissed.
The petition also claims KCPD officers used excessive force against Songz. As a result, Songz was caused “serious, permanent, and progressive injuries to his person and professional reputation.”
Songz was recently arraigned in Manhattan federal court on assault, harassment and criminal mischief charges stemming from two separate incidents at New York City clubs in which he damaged items and punched people in the face, according to reporting from CBS News.
His attorney told CBS News that Songz was confronted by several people who attempted to surround him.
Capt. Jake Becchina, a spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department, told The Star it does not comment on pending litigation to ensure “fairness for all sides involved.”
