KCK man charged in 2022 fatal shooting on I-70; claims he shot hundreds more
A man from Kansas City, Kansas, has been charged for his role in a 2022 fatal shooting on East Interstate 70, allegedly claiming it was one of hundreds of shootings he’s responsible for.
Daimon Benson faces one count of second degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, and one count of unlawful use of a weapon – shooting at/from motor vehicle, at person, motor vehicle or building, resulting in death or injury, according to Jazzlyn Johnson, spokesperson for the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office.
Police responded to a shooting on East I-70 Highway and I-29 Highway on Oct. 21, 2022. There, officers located a crashed white Toyota Camry with a woman in the driver’s seat suffering from a gunshot wound to the head, according to court documents. The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Detectives determined a gray Dodge Charger began chasing the Toyota after the Toyota allegedly cut off the Charger. Benson, who police say was in the passenger seat of the Charger, allegedly fired into the Toyota. The Toyota crashed, and the driver of the Charger fled the scene.
Benson told detectives he did not remember having any involvement in the 2022 shooting, but estimated to have shot about 400 people, according to court documents. He estimated he has shot about ten people every month from inside a vehicle, court documents said.
Benson was a juvenile at the time of the shooting and was certified Wednesday in Family Court. A Jackson County judge set the defendant’s bond at $100,000.
The defendant is a SAVE KC client, but did not attend a call-in. SAVE KC is a violence-reduction program in Kansas City that aims to move gang members away from violence, according to a press release from the prosecutor’s office.
