Mayor says KC ‘mourns loss of former neighbor’ after ICE agent shoots Renee Good
A day after a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot and killed a woman in south Minneapolis, the Kansas City community where she recently lived is grieving her death, Mayor Quinton Lucas said in a statement posted on X.
“Kansas City mourns the loss of a former neighbor, Renee Nicole Good,” Lucas said. “Two things that our country desperately needs are justice and decency.”
Lucas said he would put his faith in the authorities in Minnesota to conduct a thorough and fair investigation.
“Kansas Citians will extend our condolences to Renee’s family and friends,” he added. “And, we hope Congress actually works to prevent more tragedies like this one.”
Good lived in Kansas City as recently as the fall of 2023, court records show. She filed a petition to change her last name in Jackson County Circuit Court in October 2023, listing a Kansas City address.
Good requested a name change from Renee Nicole Macklin to Renee Nicole Macklin Good, stating the reason was to share a name with her partner.
The petition stated that Good had three children, ages 13, 10, and 3. At the time of the filing, the two older children were living in Colorado, and the youngest was living in Kansas City.
Her uncontested name change was approved in November 2023.
Good’s mother, Donna Ganger, confirmed her identity to the media in Minneapolis. She said Good lived in Minneapolis with her partner.
“Renee was one of the kindest people I’ve ever known,” Ganger told the Minnesota Star Tribune. “She was extremely compassionate. She’s taken care of people all her life. She was loving, forgiving and affectionate. She was an amazing human being.”
Good, 37, died Wednesday after being shot by an ICE agent during a targeted operation in Minneapolis.
The deadly shooting has sparked national outrage, as video of the killing has spread across social media.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said at a news conference that Good had “weaponized her vehicle” and tried to run over agents after their vehicle became stuck in snow. Noem defended the shooting as self-defense and accused Good of an act of “domestic terrorism.”
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz dispute the government’s claims surrounding what led up to the shooting. They say the videos show Good driving away from agents, not aiming at them.
