Man dies in police custody after alleged burglary in Johnson County, Missouri
The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the death of a man who was in police custody in Johnson County, Missouri, when he died.
MSHP’s Troop A was called around 6:30 p.m. Monday to respond to a burglary in the 100 block of State Route D in Knob Noster, about an hour southeast of Kansas City, according to a news release from the agency.
Troopers were informed that a subject, later identified as Bender B. Atty, 34, was allegedly breaking windows of an apartment. Two troopers and officers with the Knob Noster Police Department responded to the scene, according to the release, and found Atty allegedly armed with a knife. Officials told Atty to drop the weapon, but he allegedly did not comply.
A trooper used a taser on Atty, officials said in the news release. He was taken into custody and became unconscious shortly after, according to the release. Life-saving measures were initiated, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Atty was from Spokane, Washington, according to the release. His next of kin has been notified. An autopsy is scheduled for a later date.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control is conducting the in-custody death investigation. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the burglary.
Reports at the end of the investigation will be forwarded to the Johnson County Prosecuting Attorney for review, authorities said.
