After Kansas City house catches fire, elderly man found dead inside

Kansas City firefighters found an elderly man dead inside a burning house on New Year’s Day morning.

According to a press release, firefighters responded to a reported house fire in the 3200 block of East 52nd Street shortly before 7:30 a.m. Thursday.

“On arrival crews reported fire from the 2nd story of a 2-story structure,” the release said.

The man’s body was found inside the home in the Mount Cleveland neighborhood. No other injuries were reported.

Authorities have not identified the man, but Kansas City Fire Department Battalion Chief Riley Nolan described him as “an elderly male approximately in his nineties.”

Because the blaze was fatal, the Kansas City Police Department’s Bomb and Arson Unit will lead the investigation.

“The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and is under investigation by Bomb and Arson,” the release said.
