KCK firefighters released from hospital after being injured battling large fires
Two separate fires on Sunday night and Monday morning left five Kansas City, Kansas, firefighters hospitalized with injuries. Tuesday, the last two who had remained hospitalized were released.
The firefighters all sustained serious injuries after the Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department responded to two separate second alarm structure fires within 12 hours, according to a news release from the department, including one in which three firefighters were hurt when the floor beneath them collapsed.
That fire, the second of the two fires, occurred early Monday at approximately 3:38 a.m. at 5801 Parallel Parkway, where firefighters found a single-story vacant building with heavy fire conditions and attacked it from the inside.
Two mayday distress calls were declared while crews worked to calm the blaze, according to the department.
The first mayday was issued at 3:55 a.m., when three firefighters fell through a collapsed section of the floor to the basement. A Rapid Intervention Team was immediately deployed and successfully assisted all three firefighters to safety.
A second mayday, declared at 4:03 a.m., saw a second intervention team deployed. Four minutes later, crews were evacuated as firefighters transitioned to a defensive fire attack strategy, getting the fire declared under control at 5:53 a.m.
Four firefighters were transported to a local hospital as a result. Two firefighters were treated and released, while two others were hospitalized and released Tuesday afternoon, according to the department.
The first fire on Sunday occurred at a large storage warehouse on Sunshine Road in the Fairfax Industrial District at approximately 5:10 p.m.
A second alarm was requested because of the size and scope of the facility, which contained finished product, the fire department said. Firefighters used multiple hose lines and ventilation tactics to control the fire, which was declared under control at 6:18 p.m.
One firefighter sustained an injury from the incident and was transported to a local hospital and released on Tuesday. No injuries to facility employees were reported.
The cause of both fires is being investigated.
