One person was dead and three others injured Saturday night after a two-vehicle crash in Independence, according to police.

Police were called around 9:18 p.m. near the intersection or northbound Missouri 291 Highway and East Kentucky Road, according to Sgt. Jeff Buck, spokesperson for the Independence Police Department.

A 2004 Chevrolet Silverado drove through a red light on Kentucky Road at the intersection of Missouri 291 at the same time a 2010 Ford Ranger drove north through the intersection.

The Silverado hit the passenger side of the Ford Ranger. Both vehicles came to a rest in the southbound lanes of the highway, according to Buck.

A passenger in the Ford Ranger, identified as 36-year-old Jennifer Jensen, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other occupants inside the Ranger were transported to hospitals with serious injuries. The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado was also transported to a hospital with serious injuries

Southbound Missouri 291 was closed for several hours during the investigation, but re-opened just before 2:00 a.m.

The crash remained under investigation Sunday. Alcohol impairment was suspected to be a factor in the crash, Buck said.
