Police search Johnson County high school after someone entered building overnight

Police searched Olathe West High School Tuesday morning after reports of someone entering the building overnight, according to a school district spokesperson.

Classes resumed after police and district officials ensured the building was safe for school, police said.

“There were no threats found toward students and staff,” said Sgt. John Moncayo, a police department spokesman.

Olathe Schools sent a message to families early Tuesday letting them know about reports of someone entering the building overnight and of the police presence on campus.

Students were told to report to the main gym when they arrived until police gave the “all-clear,” a district spokesperson said.

“We have received confirmation from the police department that the building is clear, and that we can continue school as normal,” the district said in a statement to families.

“We look forward to an awesome day at West,” the statement said. “If your child was late to school due to this situation, we will not be counting tardies against them.”

According to Becky Grubaugh, a district spokeswoman, no damage was reported after the person entered the school overnight.
