A shelter in place order for residents of New Century and Gardner, Kansas, has been lifted.

Firefighters with Johnson County Fire District #1 were dispatched to the 300 block of Prairie Village Drive just after 5 p.m. Thursday after reports of an automatic alarm going off at a commercial building, a spokesperson with the department said in a Facebook post.

At the scene, firefighters located smoke coming from the building, upgrading the incident to a building fire, the spokesperson said. After the fire was extinguished, firefighters located hazardous materials inside the building.

The fire was upgraded to a hazmat incident, and residents in certain areas of New Century and Gardner were advised to shelter in place, the spokesperson said.

The shelter in place was issued as a precaution, the spokesperson said. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire. The shelter in place was lifted around 9:15 p.m.

More details about the incident are expected to be released, the spokesperson said.
