Fareway, the fast-growing grocery store chain, has opened its first full-scale store in Kansas, just outside Wyandotte County.

The company staged a grand opening this week for its 21,000-square foot Fareway Meat and Grocery store at 15790 State Avenue in Basehor, Kansas, offering a full-service store for residents in the fast-growing Leavenworth County town. The location is a few miles west of Legends and the Kansas Speedway.

Basehor has grown from about 1,600 people in 1990 to nearly 8,000 in estimates for 2024.

Fareway, which is based in a Des Moines, Iowa suburb, has also rapidly expanded to more than 140 stores across seven states, including Kansas and Missouri. The chain is known for its butcher counter and for its service bringing groceries out to customers’ cars.

“We are thrilled to open our doors in Basehor and continue growing in the great state of Kansas,” Fareway CEO Reynolds Cramer said in a statement. “This store represents more than just a new location — it’s a reflection of our promise to deliver unmatched quality, personalized service, and a hometown shopping experience.”

The Basehor store is also the first full-service Fareway in the broader Kansas City area: Smaller store concepts are currently open in Olathe, near Liberty in the Northland and in the Waldo area off Ward Parkway.

The new store also includes roof solar panels that will allow the building to generate more electricity than it uses during most daylight hours, with excess power sold back to the power company, according to a news release. The solar system is expected to generate 35% of the store’s total electricity usage.
