Wrong-way driver killed, 2 injured in crash at Kansas City International Airport

One person was killed, and two people were injured when a wrong-way driver collided with another vehicle at Kansas City International Airport early Tuesday, a police spokesman said.

The crash occurred about 5:30 a.m. just south of the new terminal at 1 Kansas City Boulevard, said Capt. Jake Becchina with the Kansas City Police Department.

Officers from the Kansas City Police Department’s accident investigation section responded to assist KCI Airport police in investigating the crash.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the driver of a dark gray Honda Fit was headed the wrong way on International Circle and collided with a dark gray Subaru just south of 1 Kansas City Boulevard, Becchina said.

The driver of the Honda was taken to a hospital, where medical staff pronounced the person dead. The driver and passenger of the Subaru were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

The driver’s death is the 59th traffic fatality of the year, compared to 82 fatalities by this time last year.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
