Two adults and a pet were displaced Sunday afternoon after two houses caught on fire in Kansas City.

The Kansas City Fire Department was originally dispatched around 1:25 p.m. to one house fire in the 4900 block of Woodland Avenue, but those who arrived found there were actually two homes on fire. Only one was occupied according to Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins, spokesperson for the KCFD.

Firefighters reported seeing heavy smoke and fire and used several landlines to fight the blaze, which was brought under control around 1:53 p.m. The occupants were able to evacuate, according to Hopkins.

Officials believe the fire started in the occupied home and spread to the vacant home next door. The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to Hopkins, and those in the occupied home were displaced. Firefighters were still on the scene working on hot spots at 2:17 p.m.
