The KC Streetcar expansion opens Friday. Here’s how the city is celebrating

Kansas City is throwing a party to celebrate the streetcar expansion opening Friday, Oct. 24.

After years of traffic cones and testing, Kansas Citians will finally be able to ride the Main Street extension of the streetcar, which takes riders in a straight line from UMKC’s campus to the River Market. Passengers will be able to ride the nearly 6-mile track for free.

The city’s hosting a two-day grand opening celebration to mark the occasion Oct. 24-25.

The festivities will begin 10 a.m. Friday with an opening ceremony featuring comments from Federal Transit Administration officials, elected officials and community leaders, according to a press release. After that, anyone can hop on board.

Here’s what else the city’s doing to celebrate the opening of the streetcar’s extension.

The weekend party picks up by the UMKC streetcar stop at 51st Street and Brookside Boulevard. The city hosts Picnic on the Line, a community celebration and drone show from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday. Guests are welcome to bring their own picnics and lawn chairs to watch the drone show, or buy food from K&C Concessions, The Food Spot and Pizza 51.

Live performances start at 5 p.m. from the UMKC Conservatory Brass Ensemble. Brass & Boujee plays at 6:30 p.m., and Summer Breeze caps the night with a concert at 8 p.m. The drone show starts at 7:30 p.m.

Kemet Coleman, a hip-hop artist who performs with Brass & Boujee, will also perform “Stay In Your Lane (Down Home Version),” the official anthem of the streetcar.
