KCPD investigates after highway patrol shoots at suspect during police chase

A Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper fired shots toward a suspect during a police chase that went across state lines Monday night, according to a news release.

The Kansas City Police Department’s dispatch was notified around 9:15 p.m. of a police chase involving the Independence Police Department.

Shortly after, the pursuit crossed state lines into Kansas, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a spokesman for KCPD. The vehicle then came back into Missouri and the highway patrol became involved in the pursuit, DiMartino said.

Around 9:45 p.m., the pursuit stopped in the 9200 block of Oakland Ave. According to preliminary information from police, an interaction between a suspect and highway patrol trooper escalated to the trooper firing shots toward the suspect.

The suspect vehicle then fled the scene, and the pursuit continued with Independence and Kansas City officers chasing the vehicle.

The pursuit ended about a quarter-mile away in the 8100 block of East 91st Terrace, where the vehicle came to a stop. Police have not yet said how the pursuit came to an end, and whether officers used vehicle stopping devices.

Officers took two suspects, one man and one woman, into custody pending further investigation, DiMartino said.

The man, identified by police as the driver of the suspect vehicle, was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound. The man’s injuries are believed to be not life-threatening, DiMartino said.

The shooting is being investigated by the Kansas City Police Department. No Kansas City or Independence officers fired their weapons during the pursuit, DiMartino said.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

An investigative series from The Star last year revealed that Independence police conduct more chases than any other police force in the metro.

More than 320 people were injured and at least nine died in area police chases over a five-year period, The Star found in its reporting.
