More than 30 train cars derail in Missouri, closing several KC train routes
An early Friday morning train derailment in Johnson County, Missouri — about an hour east of Kansas City — caused multiple train routes from Kansas City to close.
Around 1:15 a.m., 32 empty rail cars and one locomotive derailed in an upright position near Knob Noster, according to a spokesperson from railroad company Union Pacific Railroad.
None of the 275 total rail cars on the train overturned, according to Johnson County Sheriff Jeff Parsons.
No injuries occurred during the incident, which occurred near U.S. Highway 50 and North East 175th Road, between Montserrat and Knob Noster. Cleanup is underway as Union Pacific investigates, spokesperson Jill Micek said.
The derailment blocked railways, forcing multiple Amtrak routes from Kansas City to St. Louis to be canceled, according to social media posts from the company.
Johnson County, Missouri, Central Dispatch asked people to avoid the railroads at Northeast 801 Road and Northeast U.S. 50 Highway and the 740 block of Northeast 50 Highway.
