KC area police officer seriously injured in car crash during traffic stop

A Shoal Creek police officer was injured while conducting a traffic stop north of Kansas City Saturday.

Kansas City police responded just after midnight with other local divisions to Interstate 29 near NW Waukomis Drive on reports of an officer with serious injuries, according to Capt. Jake Becchina, spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department.

A preliminary investigation indicates an officer was sitting inside a blue Dodge Durango police vehicle just after midnight Saturday assisting a DUI officer on a traffic stop. The vehicle was parked on the left shoulder of the I-29 northbound bridge over NW Waukomis Drive with its emergency lights on, according to Becchina.

That’s when a blue Kia Forte sped north on I-29 and hit the back of the patrol vehicle. Both the officer and the driver of the Kia were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The officer has since been released from the hospital and is still recovering. His identity was not released.

There is an investigation underway, which according to Becchina, includes the suspected impairment of the Kia driver.
