Pedestrian struck, killed by truck in east Kansas City after running into road

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle in east Kansas City Tuesday, according to a press release from Kansas City Police Department spokesperson Capt. Jake Becchina.

Kansas City police officers responded to the area of East 31st Street and Mersington Avenue on reports of an injury collision around 4 p.m., Becchina said.

A preliminary investigation revealed a gold Ford F150 was traveling on East 31st Street when, just east of Mersington Avenue, a pedestrian ran into the road from a grassy area near the parking lot of Family Dollar, Becchina said.

The pedestrian was struck by the vehicle and “thrown to the pavement,” Becchina said.

The driver of the Ford “stopped immediately,” remained at the scene, and cooperated with police, Becchina said. The driver was not impaired.

The pedestrian was transported to an area hospital where they were pronounced dead, Becchina said.

The pedestrian’s death marks Kansas City’s 52nd traffic fatality of 2025, compared to 73 fatalities at the time last year, Becchina said.

An investigation into the collision is ongoing, Becchina said.
