Grandview man dies after hydroplaning across Missouri highway, deputies say

A 20-year-old Grandview man is dead following a three-car crash in Platte County Thursday, according to a press release from Platte County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Jeffrey Shanks.

Platte County sheriff’s responded to the crash at Missouri 45 Highway and Northwest River Road in Platte County at 6:40 a.m. Tuesday, Shanks said.

A preliminary investigation revealed a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt was traveling north on the highway when the vehicle hydroplaned and slid sideways into the southbound lane of the highway, Shanks said.

After hydroplaning into the southbound lane, the Chevrolet Cobalt was struck by a 2019 Ford Fusion, Shanks said. Both vehicles came to a rest, and were then struck by a 2019 Chevrolet Camaro.

The driver of the Chevrolet Cobalt, 20-year-old Gunnar Lee of Grandview, Missouri, was pronounced dead at the scene, Shanks said. The driver and passenger of the Ford were transported to an area hospital, and the driver of the Chevrolet Camaro received minor injuries.

The highway was closed for three hours as the Platte County Sheriff’s Office investigated the scene, Shanks said. The incident is still under investigation by the agency’s crash team.
