Semi-tanker hauling hazardous materials overturns on I-29 in Platte City
A semi-tanker overturned on Interstate 29 north of Missouri 92, forcing part of the highway that cuts through Platte City to shut down during Tuesday morning rush hour.
The truck, which was hauling hazardous materials, was headed north on I-29 and ran off the left side of the road, overturning into the median, said Cpl. Justin Ewing, a spokesman for the Missouri Highway Patrol’s Troop A. The type of material being hauled was not immediately known.
The driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital. However, The driver’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, Ewing said.
No hazardous materials spilled out as a result of the crash, and another truck was en route to transfer the contents from the overturned truck, Ewing said.
As of 9:30 a.m., the northbound lanes of I-29 remained closed, according to Kansas City Scout traffic cameras. Traffic through that area is slow moving.
At one point, southbound I-29 was closed for about an hour, but it reopened around 9 a.m., the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Kansas City District said on X, formerly known as Twitter.
