KC Family Dollar building could get new entry after roof collapsed, killed a man
The Family Dollar building in Kansas City that collapsed over the summer could be repaired, city records show.
Family Dollar, 3736 Broadway Blvd., partially collapsed July 27, killing one man and injuring others. Multiple lawsuits have been filed in connection to the collapse against Family Dollar and the building’s owner, Arthur Fels Company of Kansas City.
A pillar in the entrance area was missing after a car crashed into the building in 2016, and photos of the building over the years show that it was not replaced. The city received a complaint just days before the collapse that the structure was “tilting.”
Larry Banks, 68, died after the front facade of the building in the entrance area collapsed. After the collapse, the city placed the building on the dangerous buildings list and issued an order that it being repaired or demolished.
City filings now show a proposed project for repairs on the site. A city spokesperson confirmed that there are submitted plans to repair the entry, and the plans remain under review.
Family Dollar did not return a request for comment about whether there are plans to reopen the store.
